Washington, July 10, 2008 – In response to Iran’s test of Shahab-3 missiles this week, Mark J. Pelavin, Associate Director of the Religious Action Center of Reform Judaism, issued the following statement:
“Recent news that Iran has test-launched missiles that have the capacity to hit Israel is deeply troubling. Iran’s effort at regional dominance and anti-Israel belligerence are significantly exacerbated by its development of nuclear capacity and long range missile delivery systems. These technologies are destabilizing to the region and are a real threat to Israel and to other nearby countries. They also undermine European, U.S. and Canadian security and interests. The international community therefore must respond vigorously to these problematic displays of Iranian force.
More than ever, we must work to prevent Iran from pursuing advanced weapons technologies. For the last year the Reform Movement has advocated for the use of targeted divestment by individuals, states, congregations and the federal government as well as encouraging international sanctions to hinder significantly Iranian military capabilities and aspirations. We will continue to promote vigorously these policies.
It is our hope that Iran will cease such actions as these missile tests and pursue a path of peaceful coexistence with the international community. Until that time, we remain committed to urging the international community to act as effectively as possible to prevent the Iranian government from pursuing misguided military action.
