WASHINGTON, D.C., June 25, 2009 - In recognition of the third anniversary of the capture of Israeli soldier Gilad Shalit, Mark J. Pelavin, Associate Director of the Religious Action Center of Reform Judaism, issued the following statement:
Today, we mark with sadness, disappointment, and, yes, anger, the third anniversary of the capture of Gilad Shalit. On June 25, 2006, Hamas terrorists broke across the Gaza-Israel border, killed two Israeli soldiers, and took Gilad captive in Gaza, where he remains today, as Hamas continues to refuse requests for access by the Red Cross.
Our thoughts and prayers are with the Shalit family as their struggle to be reunited with Gilad continues. We hope that Prime Minister Netanyahus recent declaration of a personal commitment to achieving Gilads safe release will result in success.
We hope and pray that a renewed effort and diplomatic ingenuity can, at last, help deliver Gilad home safely and expeditiously, achieve an end to the rocket attacks, improve conditions for civilians facing difficult circumstances in Gaza, and help build for a more hopeful future for all.
