June 12, 2007 | Washington, D.C.— In response to the continuing missile attacks on the residents of the Israeli town of Sderot, Rabbi David Saperstein, Director of the Religious Action Center of Reform Judaism, issued the following statement:
The ongoing terror of missile attacks on the civilians of Sderot is an attack not only on the men, women and children who reside there, but upon peace itself. The shooting of rockets into residential neighborhoods, schools, hospitals and homes is abhorrent and an affront to humanity. Our hearts ache for the families of those wounded and killed in these sickening attacks.
We pray for those children scared to attend school, for those business owners trying to support their families amidst random acts of violence, and for all those who seek to maintain a normal lifestyle despite the horrors of everyday life. We pray for the safety of the people of Sderot and stand with them in solidarity against terror.
Violence will never lead to the peaceful future desired by families throughout the region. We call on the Palestinian people and leadership, as well as the broader international community, to condemn these acts of terrorism and call for an end to the missile attacks.
