Washington, July 31, 2008 – In response to the House of Representatives’ passage of the Family Smoking Prevention and Tobacco Control Act, Rabbi David Saperstein, Director of the Religious Action Center of Reform Judaism, issued the following statement:
The House of Representatives took a courageous and historic stand today in support of public health by forging ahead with life-saving legislation authorizing the Food and Drug Administration to regulate tobacco products. This bill sends a clear message that we will no longer stand for the unregulated, unsupervised distribution of tobacco products, which are responsible for the deaths of more than 400,000 Americans each year.
We bury far too many mothers, fathers, sisters and brothers who die prematurely as a result of tobacco addiction and secondhand smoke. Let today’s passage of the Family Smoking Prevention and Tobacco Control Act serve as a tribute to their memory and as a signal of our commitment to prioritizing and protecting the health of all Americans.
We call on the Senate pass this vital bill by the end of the year in order to provide necessary and substantial protection from the dangers of smoking.
