Washington, D.C. | June 20, 2007 – In response to President Bush’s veto today of legislation to expand federal funding of embryonic stem cell research, Barbara Weinstein, Legislative Director of the Religious Action Center of Reform Judaism, issued the following statement:

We are deeply saddened by President Bush’s decision to again stand in the way of embryonic stem cell research. Such research has the strong support of the American public, scientific community and Congress, all of whom understand that federal funding of embryonic stem cell research is the best method of moving science forward with appropriate speed and proper oversight. While we welcome the President’s support for other forms of stem cell research, we must note that his veto serves only to limit the ability of scientists to move forward on the most promising form of stem cell research to date.

We will continue to work with members of Congress and others to ensure that embryonic stem cell research, which holds tremendous potential to provide treatment or cures for a host of medical conditions, receives the strong federal support it deserves.
