September 7, 2007 | Washington DC – In response to the Senate’s vote to end restrictions on funding overseas health organizations that perform or discuss abortions, Jane Wishner, Chair of the Union for Reform Judaism’s Commission on Social Action, issued the following statement:
We applaud the Senate’s decision to reverse current, harmful U.S. policy, which has for too long denied essential funds to overseas clinics that perform or even discuss abortions. This misguided policy has forced clinics to either provide incomplete family planning information or to refuse desperately needed funds. The impact has been most felt by women in poor countries whose lives and health depend on the counsel they receive from these organizations.
We urge the House and Senate conferees to the Foreign Aid bill to follow the Senate’s lead on this issue. Providing comprehensive and accurate family planning information is an essential step in ensuring a higher quality of life for women everywhere.
