WASHINGTON, D.C., March 4th, 2010 - On the occasion of the Senate Judiciary Committees vote on the nomination of Dawn Johnsen to head the Office of Legal Counsel at the Department of Justice, Rabbi David Saperstein, Director of the Religious Action Center of Reform Judaism, issued the following statement:

We welcome todays Senate Judiciary Committee vote to once again advance to the full Senate Dawn Johnsens nomination to head the Justice Departments Office of Legal Counsel. For more than a year, this nomination has fallen victim to obstruction and inaction. Ms. Johnsen is supremely qualified for this post and deserves the up-or-down vote that her nomination has been long denied.

At this time when our Justice Department is struggling with challenges that speak to the essence of American values and the rule of law, we cannot afford to let this post remain unfilled when such a capable nominee is willing to serve. I sincerely hope that todays Judiciary Committee vote provides the momentum necessary finally to confirm Ms. Johnsen to the critical post to which she has been nominated.
