Sustainable Food Systems and Jewish Tradition: Temple Isaiah (Lexington, MA)

Temple Isaiah will explore concepts of sustainability, Jewish traditions, and connections with the natural world reflected in our food systems and eating choices as one of its 50th anniversary (or Jubilee Year) events. The program will include presentations and a panel on “Sustainability, What it Means Today and Its Ties to Ancient Jewish Values,” featuring a local Jewish environmentalist (and rabbinical student), Community Supported Agriculture (CSA) experts, and local farmers. Later this spring, Temple Isaiah will break ground on their Interfaith Garden project. Temple Isaiah’s project embodies the ideals underlying the Just Table, Green Table Initiative: that living in concert with the land and maintaining a sustainable environment may seem like modern concepts, but its Jewish roots go back to our ancient values. Through educational events and the hands-on garden project, the members of Temple Isaiah will explore and deepen the connections between Jewish practice, environmental justice, and sustainable food systems.
